Five Moms About to Graduate from GW Med School

Hello, everyone!

I apologize again for not posting here in so long! I am done with year 2 at the George Washington Univ School of Med in DC and I am in the thick of studying for Step 1. I'm still loving every second!

A fellow nontrad in my class forwarded me this article about five of my upperclassmen that are about to graduate. They are all over 35 and mothers. Take a read if you've got the time. They are an inspiration for all nontrads!

Keep going for your dream! YOU CAN DO IT!

Take Biochem & Molecular Bio

Hi, Non-trad Pre-meds,

I just wanted to say that Biochem (i.e. Dr. Peter Doucette's Chem 153 series at UCLA Extension) and Molecular Bio (i.e. Prof. Michael Strathearn's Life Sciences 3 at UCLA Extension) have been saving me incredible amounts of time this semester at med school. I brought my notes with me -- thank you, Dr. Doucette for such AMAZING lecture handouts -- and I couldn't be happier. I have actually had more time to spend with my daughter because of it!

So, here's my advice, especially if you want to go to the GW School of Med:
take Biochem and Intro to Molecular Bio during premed, and bring your notes with you to med school!

Best,
Sara

Hello from Med School!

Hi, everyone!

It's been a while since I posted, but my reason is a good one--I'm in med school!

Keep plugging away, non-trads! IT IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT. First semester has been fantastic so far. I love the material. I love the camaraderie. I love the professors. I love the day-to-day goals and the overall goal. I couldn't be happier with my choice in school and my new career path.

Because Tanya, Aurora, and I are all in MD/DO school, we had to transform the club into an online support team. So please be patient in getting replies from us, but do keep sending us your questions. We will help as much as we can.

A quick note about what we can and cannot do... We're not advisors, so we're not going to review your individual situations, go over your transcripts and personal statements, or tell you where you should consider applying. However, we WILL share with you our experiences and our personal opinions. We WILL provide you with every resource we know of. We WILL encourage you and listen to your frustrations. We WILL give you specifics on how we got through the premed classes at UCLA Extension and how we got into med school. We WILL tell you, "NO, YOU ARE NOT CRAZY. YOU CAN DO THIS AND DO IT WELL." I don't write this to discourage you from contacting us; I write it so as not to have to disappoint you in our replies.

All right. That's it from me for now. I've got to study Gross Anatomy. I'll post again when I can.

Don't give up,
Sara

Med school Info session done by UCLA

Hello, Everyone,

I got this email from the volunteering program I did. I thought you might be interested.

Dear Volunteers:

Hello,

I am extending an invitation to all of your students to come to our next ARC meeting. I have arranged for Lili Fobert (Admissions for the David Geffen School of Medicine) and Gloria Pineda (Financial Services) from David Geffen School of Medicine to speak for about 10 -15 minutes each about med school here at UCLA.

All of MAPS, LINC and any student is welcome to come hear them speak and to ask questions. I know that most of our students are pre med so this will be hopefully very helpful to them. Please share this with your students.

The meeting will be Friday, May 1st at 4 pm in the Auditorium B130.

Thank you,
Lisa Harden
